Different between Art and Design
While there are people capable of differentiating art from design, there are those who do not fully understand the concept of the two. To them, art and design are one and the same and any difference is insignificant. Because of such notions, the debate over whether there is a difference between art and design has raged on for a while now (Elimeliah). While some designers would consider themselves artists, there are few, if any, artists who consider themselves as artists. Since designers and artists are professionals in their own field, an artist not using the title designer gives a hint that two are not as similar as people would like to think.
Art is more of an emotional process that triggers the sense of curiosity and leads the audience to ask questions upon encountering a piece of artwork . Since the emotion evoked solely lies on the person viewing the art, a piece of art could have different meanings depending on who is interpreting it. While there are schools meant for teaching artists, the skill is more innate and most artists are born capable of creating art. It is also intended to meet the needs of the artist and even though it may have meaning, it is seldom usable other than for the purpose intended by the artist (Elimeliah).
On the other hand, Design is a process that is comprehensive and must be understood so as to know its purpose. In most cases, the purpose is to provide information or solve a problem that has been identified in society. Designs, therefore, help people to live comfortably or perform actions that would be tedious or impossible without specific designs. While some people are better designers than others, design is a skill that can be taught and perfected over time (Elimeliah). It is because design follows a specific set of plans that lead to the desired result. In some cases, the design may come out in a way that could be considered as art. This does not mean that they are the same and since they all serve different purposes, one cannot state which is better than the other.
